Refuge Coffee Co.: A Place with a Cause, Good Vibes, & Style

I am a resident of a small city touching edges of Decatur and Stone Mountain, called Clarkston, GA. A unique place that feels a bit different than the bustling inner city of Atlanta. While I never planned to move here, it was not by chance that I landed my nest in this beautifully diverse place. My adventurous soul began exploring, and I stumbled across one of many jewels that this “small town…big heart” has to offer: Refuge Coffee Co.

A simple yet stylish, chill, chic, indoor/outdoor vibe with tasty, quality products.

Comfy couches, various seating areas for work or relaxation, free WiFi, games & toys to entertain the little ones, and beautiful people all around.

This spot is more than just any old coffee shop, though. It was created with love and refuge in mind, by Founder, Kitti Murray, who believes in a “vibrant, resettled community in Clarkston, Ga.” Refuge Coffee Co. creates a place of refuge by training, coaching, mentoring, and hiring refugees. In addition to this powerful vision, the truck is expanding to create more jobs for the residents of Clarkston, by opening a full shop and roasting hub. You can also stop in to donate your new/gently used clothes that local families get to choose from before they get taken to Goodwill. Refuge Coffee CO. is always bustling with events and volunteer opportunities, so if you are looking to get involved, pay them a visit! The staff is friendly, and Kitti, the Founder, is always gracious enough to share a quick chat in the midst of her busy schedule.

You can’t quite see Melissa’s face, but this was us at the beginning of our riding adventure. The professionals make sure that we are well-acquainted with the horses, and the rules of riding, before letting us go off on our own. Say “hello” to Champagne (my horse in the back), and Fancy, the white and brown one leading the way.

Adventures at Glitz & Glamour Equestrian Center

This past weekend, my love and I had the pleasure of going horseback riding for his mother’s birthday celebration. As soon as I got the invite, I was all in… but I had no idea that it would be such a rewarding experience. The owner, Melissa Brown, and her family were more than gracious and personable. They felt like family! And, may I mention that it is a Black-owned equestrian center?!

Right upon our arrival, we were kindly greeted, and invited to the stable to pet the horses. The facility is well-maintained, very homely, and spacious, sitting on acres of land to ride the horses on trails, or to just stay in the party camp area with them. After signing our waivers, we walked down a short path to a secluded woodsy area that was all set up with tables and chairs for the party.

For all events, they provide all tents, tables, and chairs, but you can bring your own music, grill, food, etc. The owners make sure that you have privacy, as well as all of the essentials to get the party going- including their 5 well-trained, friendly horses! Even the restroom was fresh and clean! Did I mention that they also provide a variety of games to choose from, such as archery, bowling, mini-golf, gigantic tic-tac-toe, life-size checkers and giant jenga, to name a few. Yes. The Browns also stick around when they bring the horses out to give short lessons, and of course, to monitor the horses.

Here is a quick interview that we conducted with the owner:

How long have you been in business?

“I’ve been doing this for 8 years.”

When did your love for horses all start?

“I didn’t grow up around horses, believe it or not. I grew up closer to the city, and was very prissy. One day, I ended up taking horseback riding lessons with my sister and her child, and I fell in love with the horses.”

What other things do you do/offer here?

“We do summer camps, special parties, family reunions, weddings, girl/boy scouts camps. Also, we offer private and group lessons for those who are beginners to advanced.”

In the midst of keeping an eye out for the horses, Melissa was more than willing to answer any questions that myself, and the other guests had for her. Needless to say with all of my enthusiasm, we will definitely be returning to Glitz & Glamour Equestrian Center for another celebration! We hope that you will go check them out!
