Making Moon Crystal Potions: An easy guide to creating your own elixirs

Happy new moon-ish (now in Cancer, and a waxing crescent) to you! The energy of Motha’ New Moon will still linger around for a few days after her void on the 13th, so if you haven’t already set your intentions, then it is not too late. Actually, it’s never too late! Energy is always flowing and serving, but we just like to ride the waves of moon transitions for more power. Anyways, I’m here to share a little about some crystal elixirs that I set out to bask in the sun and moon yesterday. Whenever I’m focused on manifesting or healing something very specific, I like to use nature’s tools in different ways. If you’ve already experienced the blessings of the earth’s crystal minerals, then you know that they can be potent healers. Using them as tonics, potions, or elixirs is just another way to experience their healing properties. As with all things, there are some precautions and tips to abide by, so please do not get too excited and go drop your favorite gems into water after reading this intro! Before I began using crystal elixirs and waters more than a year ago, I read all about it, and I’m glad that I did, because there is so much to learn about mixing crystals and energy! We will start with some do’s, don’ts, and tips for your crystal creations, first.

Do:

Crystal Elixer Caution Chart

  • Read about different ways to make crystal elixirs, just to familiarize yourself with the concept.
  • Know why you are doing it. Just because the term “potion,” or “elixir” seems fun, whimsical, and magical, it is so important to know why you are choosing this healing method. While crystals are beautiful gifts, they are also FULL of things that can shift both your physical and spiritual body. Decide if you want to use it as a topical or internally. These things matter.
  • Gather your materials from around the house. No need to go make any purchases for this one. Just using what you have makes the process more meaningful & magickal!
  • Use crystals that you are familiar with, and have worked with before for the first time
  • Start off small and easy. Just try using one crystal, the first time around.

Don’t:

  • DON’T use crystals that are soluble like selenite. Not only will they dissolve in water, but they can cause significant damage if used internally. (Like, death.) No fear, just research everything. The internet is a great source, but books and scholarly articles tend to have more research-based evidence.

Keep the following in mind when cleansing your crystals:

Crystal Types to avoid contact with water:

  • Azurite, Halite, Selenite – water soluble.
  • Lapis lazuli, Opal, Turquoise – porous, do not soak, dry after cleansing.
  • Malachite – use cool water only, dry after cleansing.

Light sensitive crystal types:

  • Amethyst, Rose Quartz – may fade.
  • Turquoise – may dry out.

Heat sensitive crystal types:

  • Amethyst – may fade in gentle heat, becomes colorless in strong heat.
  • Quartz – may fracture with sudden temperature changes.
  • Lapis Lazuli – avoid high heat.
  • Malachite – avoid sudden temperature changes.
  • Tourmaline – high heat alters colors.
  • Turquoise – sensitive to all heat.

Easily scratched crystal types:

  • Metallic crystals or minerals.
  • Calcite, Celestite, malachite, Fluorite, Rhodochrosite, Apatite, Lapis Lazuli.
  • Sodalite, Selenite, Turquoise, Hematite, Moonstone.
  • DON’T use crystals that are heavy metals, sulfuric, or acidic for drinking.
  • DON’T mix too many crystals in your water. Having knowledge of which crystals work best together is another key to making elixirs and potions. Just as you are using the crystals for meditation, you always want to have somewhat of an understanding of the crystal’s purpose.

Now, onto the fun stuff- the potions!

Gather up your materials…

  • Glass jar (or bowl and something to cover the bowl with like plastic wrap or cloth if you don’t have a jar with lid). If you are using the non-direct method (crystal is placed in container, and then that container is placed in the glass jar with water, so that the crystals is not directly touching water), then you will need another container for the actual crystal. Research which method you’d like to use, based on your own needs & crystals.
  • Crystals of choice. Just a few common and safe elixir crystals for internal use are clear quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, moonstone, and citrine. Many other crystals that are not good for consumption, however, can still be used for external use, just as long as they will not get damaged when submerged in water. You can use one crystal, several of the same, or a few different water-safe crystals. Be mindful that the more you use, the more potent the product will be.
  • Spring water is the best choice. Stay away from distilled water and faucet water if you are not certain about the water quality in your area. I used alkaline water this time around.
  • Optional- Strainer, cheesecloth, or even a paper towel, if you are using the direct crystal-to-water method
  • Your intention. What do you will your crystal water to do for you?

Rose Quartz based elixir for love.

Made with Square InstaPic
Rose quartz potion is the perfect mixture for love, opening the heart space, forgiveness, self-love, and compassion. I added in rhodonite, which is a powerful stone of compassion as well. This potion helps with strength, resiliency, unconditional love, releasing, and emotional healing.

I say “based,” because I added in some moonstone and rhodonite to mine. All you need is rose quarts for this one.

  • 1 rose quartz crystal
  • 1 rhodonite crystal (optional)
  • 1 moonstone (optional)
  • 3 cups of clean water (you can use more or less water, depending on the size of jar and potency you desire)
  • Large glass jar & lid

Citrine based elixir for Abundance

Citrine potion brings high-energy sun healing, with an ignited will-power (solar plexus). This elixir was charged for abundance, and set with my own personal intentions. Also helps with immune and digestive systems of the body. The moonstone balances all energetic realms, attunes to divine feminine energy, brings inner peace, and removes negative energy.
  • 1 citrine crystal (I used several for the potency, and because I will be diluting for more than one use over the next few days).
  • 1 moonstone crystal
  • 3 cups of clean water (you can use more or less water, depending on the size of jar and potency you desire)
  • Large glass jar or lid, or a French press, if you like to use what you have already like me 😉

Making your potion:

  1. Clean your crystal(s) by rinsing to get any dust or settlement off of it. You can also place crystal between hands, and send your energy to clear it of any negative or stagnant energy.
  2. Place the crystal(s) in the jar, gently, so that the jar does not crack.
  3. Pour your water over the crystal OR over your container that holds the crystal.
  4. Wrap your hands around the crystal, relax, and set your intention. Send your life force energy into the jar, thinking about what you will this potion to do for you. It helps to know a little about the crystals that you are using, so that you can align your intention with that of the crystal.
  5. Place lid or covering over the jar, to prevent any unwanted objects from getting in there.
  6. Place outdoors, under the new moon light or in the sun of the new moon day. Note, some crystals are best placed in moon versus sun, so be sure to research that beforehand if you are using different crystals.
  7. Leave jar to charge and create, for a few hours, or overnight. When your potion is ready, you can take the crystals out by pouring the water into another clean jar or container. If you see and particles or floating things that may have come from the air or bottle, you can use a strainer, pour the water into another clean jar, and it’s ready to use.
  8. If you plan to keep this water for more than a few days, it is suggested that you preserve it by adding a few drops of a natural alcohol-based liquid like vodka or brandy. If you are just going to use the water the same day, then there is no need for this.

Tips & Tricks: What can I do with my potion?

  • Mix drops of the water into your regular drinking water, tea, smoothies, juices, etc.
  • Place drops directly underneath the tongue
  • Add to your bath water
  • Wash face or hair with it
  • Place in a spray bottle, and use around the home/workplace
  • Mix with other special oils, rubs, lotions, etc. for topical treatments
  • Place in a dropper bottle to use for specific areas of the body
  • Great for smoke-less smudging around home or places that need cleansing
  • Use reiki, if you have been attuned, to super-charge your potion
  • Use other tools, like your pendulum, to see how much water to use, and where to use it if you need some help.

What is important here, is knowing the amount to use, how much to dilute, and the reason why you are using the potion. There isn’t really a single guide on this but sticking to drops in the beginning to see how your body/spirit handles your special elixir is safest. As always, use your intuition, and read, read, read, before trying anything new. The product of your crystal moon potion can be used for self, pets, or children, and serves many purposes.
